Yellow Card partnered with one of the most influential voices for the youth in Kenya - the JoyRide Podcast to reach the youth across the country and educate them on financial literacy.

As a continent, Africa has seen a slow but steady move towards widespread adoption of cryptocurrencies, with young people taking the lead.

Through its continued efforts to ensure that people on the continent are equipped with the right knowledge, Yellow Card introduced an educational program known as The Financial Literacy Tour. During these tours, representatives of the company go to different tertiary institutions across Africa to impact young people and share resources to enlighten them financially.

Most recently, Yellow Card partnered with one of the most influential voices for the youth in Kenya - the JoyRide Podcast in order to reach the youth across the country. This partnership follows a previous successful partnership. The JoyRide podcast is a creation of celebrated content creators Ben Cyco and Wanjiru Njiru and has rapidly gained popularity since its inception. It boasts over 7 million listens across various platforms.

During a podcast conversation, Sharon Tum, the Regional Operations Manager for Yellow Card in East Africa said; “We are very excited about our partnership with JoyRide because we both share a passion for educating young people on how to create value for themselves. Over 50% of our customers are University students, which is why we are passionate about this tour. We are now able to show them how they can make money using Yellow Card in the digital economy through buying and selling digital assets and even starting a business with access to global suppliers who accept payments in digital assets.”

The extension is important because we will reach and onboard an even wider new audience ready to learn more about Yellow Card and how we can impact their lives for the better.

This tour has gone to four schools in four Counties so far: Eldoret, Nakuru, Embu, and Thika, where over four thousand students and young people were impacted. In January 2024, it will be going to the final school in Mombasa. During the tour, the participants received insights on various topics. These included entrepreneurship, digital economy, transferable skills and the creative industry, similar to what they did in collaboration with Tether and Circle, educating students and young people across three countries on the use of USDT and USDC, respectively.

The hosts of the JoyRide podcast said, “The tour has given us visibility in different parts of the country since it happens in universities in different parts of Kenya. It gave us access to reach an audience we wouldn't normally reach. We have met enthusiastic students ready to sign up with Yellow Card to learn new things and have the time and curiosity to look into new ways of making money.”

According to a Forbes study, young adults are the most likely to use cryptocurrency. 31% of those aged 18 to 29 have used it, compared to 21% of those aged 30 to 49, 8% of those aged 50 to 64, and 3% of those aged 65 or older.

However, one of the major challenges the continent faces is a lack of sufficient knowledge about the crypto industry and finances; this is where Yellow Card’s Financial Literacy tours come in, imparting knowledge to ensure financial inclusion for all and the Yellow Card Academy is also available to all customers who want to learn more about how to take charge of their finances. Below are the details of the topics covered over the course of three months during the tour.

Entrepreneurship:

The financial literacy tour unpacked the entrepreneurial landscape, exploring the challenges, triumphs, and invaluable lessons learned along the way. Ben Cyco and Wanjiru Njiru, alongside Yellow Card representatives, shared personal anecdotes and insights to inspire aspiring entrepreneurs, providing a roadmap for navigating the dynamic world of business and their financial journeys.

Transferable Skills Learned in Formal Education:

Acknowledging the importance of formal education, this topic covered discussions on the transferable skills gained through academic pursuits such as resilience, people management, business management, etc. By highlighting the relevance of these skills in real-world scenarios, the tour aimed to bridge the gap between education and practical application and equip students with tools for success.

The Creative Industry and Possible Solutions for Young Creatives:

In an era where creativity is a driving force, the tour explored the vast opportunities within the creative industry. The hosts discussed the challenges faced by young creatives and presented viable solutions to empower them in their artistic endeavours. From navigating the digital landscape to finding their unique voice, participants gained valuable insights into the creative world.

Financial Literacy in the Digital Economy:

Recognising the transformative power of the digital economy, the podcast focused on strategies for making money in the online realm, shedding light on digital revenue streams like podcasts, content creation, etc, and providing practical advice on monetising digital presence effectively. This segment aimed to demystify the complexities of the digital economy and empower individuals to capitalise on its vast potential.

Converting a Digital Presence to Actual Revenue:

Building on the theme of financial literacy, this segment guided participants on converting a digital presence into tangible revenue. From leveraging social media platforms to exploring e-commerce opportunities, the tour equipped attendees with actionable steps to turn their online presence into a sustainable income stream.

For a lot of the participants, this tour opened their eyes to the vast opportunities provided by both digital economies and digital finance and how they can leverage both for economic empowerment. They felt empowered to build their careers and businesses, leveraging the resources available to them.

As the Yellow Card extended its financial literacy tour in collaboration with the JoyRide Podcast, the partnership signified a commitment to nurturing dreams and instilling the knowledge needed to thrive in an ever-evolving world. Together, they set out to leave a lasting impact on the journey of personal and financial growth, empowering individuals to confidently navigate the complexities of the modern landscape.
